Avocado oil · Zero-waste agro-processing · Bujumbura

Burundi’s avocados,pressed into green gold.

Green Gold Burundi is the home of Green Processing Company (GPC), a Burundian agri-food company. We buy avocados from farms across the country’s hills and press them into premium crude avocado oil for food, cosmetics and refining buyers. Everything left after pressing is turned into fertilizer, feed and fuel.

From the hills, to the press, to the world, and back to the soil.

The opportunity

The fruit is already here.
Until now, the value left with it.

Plant-based and clean-label diets keep widening the market.

GPC begins operating in Burundi

Joining a growing network of Burundian agri-food processors.

Kenya and South Africa lead Africa’s avocado trade. Burundi has the climate, altitude and soils to grow excellent fruit but little processing capacity, so much of the value ends up elsewhere or rots on the tree. GPC was set up to press that fruit at home, to international standards, and to pay Burundian farmers for it.

Market figures as cited by Green Processing Company.

The model

One fruit. Four products.

Nothing leaves the plant as waste.

Crude avocado oil is our main product. Pulp residue, skins and seeds go into three more product lines, so a lower-grade fruit still has a use and the plant sends almost nothing to landfill.

The chain

Seven steps between the tree and the tank.

Our process is rigorous, sustainable and certified. Each step exists to protect the one thing a buyer cannot check later: what happened to the fruit before it became oil.

What we press

Three varieties, one standard.

01

Hass

Pebbled skin, near-black when ripe

Creamy flesh with a nutty flavour and a high oil content. The benchmark variety for oil.

02

Fuerte

Smooth, thin green skin

Mild, buttery flavour. An established variety that gives a clean, light oil.

03

Local

Grown across Burundi’s hills

Grown in Burundi’s fertile soils. Valued for its generous flesh and rich nutrients.

Women first

Half the jobs. By design, not by accident.

Many of Burundi’s avocados are grown, picked and carried by women. We have committed to women holding at least half of the jobs we create, on the sorting line, in the laboratory, in logistics and in management. We are also working with women-led cooperatives on the supply side.
